Physical Therapy, Occupational Therapy and Speech-Language Pathology Residency and Fellowship Programs

Residency and fellowship programs provide participants with accelerated clinical learning experiences in preparation for board certification. The typical curriculum includes a combination of course work, research projects and direct patient care under the guidance of an assigned mentor.

If you’re thinking about applying for a residency or fellowship program, there are many factors to consider when deciding which one is right for you.

Why choose a residency or fellowship program

  1. One-on-one mentoring
An experienced mentor is an ideal resource for helping you master clinical skills and guiding your career development. Participants are paired with a dedicated mentor for the duration of the program – someone who will provide one-on-one coaching and advice on:
    • Understanding and implementing complex treatment strategies
    • Improving productivity
    • Developing networks
  2. Hiring decisions
Completion of a residency and/or fellowship program allows the candidate to apply for advanced specialty certification.

Holding a specialty credential may improve employment opportunities. It could also help you to negotiate more favorable compensation, especially when you can demonstrate how your acquired skills have impacted patient care and outcomes.
  3. Specializations
Program specializations feature curriculums focused on in-depth course work and clinical care options for specific patient diagnoses. To help fast-track your learning and skill level, the program will pair you with a mentor who specializes in treating this issue and/or condition.

Things to consider when applying for a position

  1. Relocation: There may not be a residency or fellowship program of interest near your current location; you may need to move to attend it.
  2. Tuition and/or other expenses: Prior to applying for the program, confirm if you’re expected to pay tuition and/or other expenses.
  3. Salary: Advocate Health provides salaries commensurate with residency and fellowship employment.
  4. Time to study: Advanced programs also require dedicated study time outside of the classroom and clinic.

When deciding to apply for a residency or fellowship program, it’s important that you research your options.
